Two and a Half Hours in Shibuya

Shibuya is one of the big commercial stations on the main rail line, and most famous as the place where you can watch thousands of people crossing the street during rush hour. I stopped at Shibuya yesterday at about 5:30, and ended up watching the pedestrian traffic for two hours. Here's the intersection. No, you don't need to be a sumo wrestler to cross the street.

A five-point intersection, there are few jaywalkers during the minute and forty-five seconds of vehicle traffic: cars, vans, trucks, scooters, motorcycles, and several tv-screen covered buses promoting movies and albums.
Within seconds, the sidewalks fill with pedestrians.
And then forty-five minutes, when tens of thousands of people cross the street in all directions at once.

I stayed til the sun went down, watching probably hundreds of thousands of people on their way home from work, out for the night, and so on.
