ADMT

Today we went to a museum of advertising, the ADMT museum in Shinbashi, in an amazingly labyrinthine underground mall/skyscraper complex. No pictures were allowed, though while we were there, we met the designers of the exhibit, who invited us to come to their design studio, perhaps next week. (So maybe some future pictures.) The exhibit was really fascinating, and all I can share are some fuzzy pictures of postcards on sale.

Above is an eighteenth-century woodprint based on a traditional style of painting, but it includes a product placement. Below, an advertising flyer using a figure from traditional theater; these started appearing in the late 17th century.
I loved this picture: late 19th century advertising flyer distribution, by a geisha in a British hot air balloon.
And an early twentieth century picture combining traditional Japanese elements, modernist art styles, and again product placement.
