Friday we had a pretty hectic day trip to Kyoto, the old capital of Japan before the shift to Tokyo. It's about two and a half hours by bullet train (seen below, pulling into the Shinagawa station). Several people commented that it didn't seem that fast (speeds up to about 185 mph), which seemed a trick of the landscape. Coming back at night in the dark, we seemed to be moving incredibly fast, and when you tried to walk through the cars, you had a sense of the tremendous speed.
Most of the sights in Kyoto are seventeenth century imperial buildings and shrines, many with nice gardens. Here's the shogun's garden at the main palace.
There's an older "historic" district as well, with traditional buildings (you can see a bamboo wall in the background here) and some geishas in training. We saw a few out on the street as we hunted for a restaurant.
Some of the roofing of one of the Buddhist shrines (sorry, the skies are very overcast here, so almost always appear whitish).
And an entranceway to the imperial palace.
