Calligraphy

Tuesday we took students to an area near Shibuya for a calligraphy class. It was a very basic but interesting class, beginning with meditation and the preparation of ink, and some practice with the three basic strokes. One thing that distinguishes the calligraphy stroke is that you use the brush differently from a pen, holding it neatly vertical, and making a commitment to the full stroke in one movement (you don't go back and touch up the stroke). How you ink the brush, how you start the stroke, how you end the stroke--all these will determine the appearance of your final kanji. Below is the kanji symbol for human, made from two brushstrokes from the top of the page:
