Yesterday we went out to see the Tokyo Tower, completed in the late 1950s, and about 13 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower, its obvious model. The Tower was apparently painted orange and white for purposes of air traffic safety, though maybe the bright colors helped attract Mothra and Godzilla. Suprisingly, you can't see it from many parts of Tokyo, because the city is so built up. Here's a view within three or four blocks--the Tower rising over a nearby Shinto shrine.
A typical view from the Tower, city as far as the eye can see.
Descending, the bright orange stairwell.
One of the mascots for the tower, pretty incomprehensible.
